Position Description:

American Samoa Legal Aid, Inc., (ASLA) is seeking to employ a full-time attorney for our non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal services to low-income residents of American Samoa, a U.S. territory in the South Pacific.

About the Position:

ASLA is interested in hiring an attorney preferably with experience in representing clients in civil matters. Experience in one or more of the following areas would be helpful: Family Law, Consumer Law, Home Foreclosure Defense, Disaster Legal Assistance, Debt Collection Defense, Administrative Law, Immigration, Domestic Violence, Social Security, Public Benefits, etc.

No New Bar Exam:

Applications do not need to take a local bar exam. They just need to already be licensed to practice law in any of the 50 U.S. states.

Responsibilities:

        Provide effective legal advice and representation of ASLA clients.

        Make numerous court appearances on behalf of ASLA clients.

        Perform work assigned by the Executive Director.

        Comply with applicable Legal Services Corporation regulations in 45 CFR Part 1600 et. seq. or grant requirements.

        Adhere to ASLA Board and Office policies.

        Articulate ASLA’s mission in the legal community, judiciary, government, nonprofit organizations and the community at large.

Requirements:

        Must have a JD from an ABA accredited law school in one of the 50 U.S. states or D.C.

        Currently admitted to a Bar in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C., and licensed to practice law.

        Admitted or eligible for admission to practice law in American Samoa.

        Possess the highest ethical standards.

        Possess excellent communication skills.

        Excellent computer skills.

        Value diversity and be culturally competent.

        Ability to work well together with the Board, Executive Director and support staff to fulfill the ASLA mission and Strategic Plan action goals.

        Demonstrate a commitment to serve low-income residents.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary for full-time staff attorney starts at $60,000 per year. There are 30 days paid vacation per year, and ASLA will reimburse you for up to $1200 for your airfare getting to the island after you have been here for three months.
